James E. Winters

Forestport- James E. Winters, 64, of River St., husband of Susan, passed away at his residence on Saturday, June 4, 2016, after a long battle with cancer. Jim was born in Utica, on April 8, 1952, a son of Howard and Rena Hall Winters. He grew up in Forestport and attended Forestport Central School, through 11th grade, graduating from Adirondack Central High School, Boonville, with the Class of 1971. While in high school, Jim excelled at playing basketball and as the pitcher for the baseball team; following high school, he enjoyed pitching for town team soft ball leagues. For many years Mr. Winters was employed as a mason and foreman at Campbell's Masonry Co. Remsen. On October 6, 1979, Jim was united in marriage with Susan Sliter at First Presbyterian Church, Boonville. In 1980, the couple moved to their present home. Jim was a 20 year member of Forestport Fire Fighters, where he served for six years as Fire Department Chief. He greatly enjoyed snowmobile racing; for many years he raced under NNYVSR Snowmobile Racing Association and under the title of Winters Bros. Racing. He also enjoyed riding on snowmobile trails and hunting and fishing. Jim will be fondly remembered for his excellent skills and talents as a woodworker; he greatly enjoyed creating lawn furniture and lawn ornaments. In addition to his wife, Sue, Jim is survived by one son, Benjamin Edward Winters, Forestport; four brothers, Richard Winters, Forestport, Harold Winters, Boonville, Carl Winters and his wife, Brenda, Forestport, Jerry Winters and his wife, Sheila, Woodgate; one sister, Jeanie Frerk, Fabius, and many nieces and nephews. Jim is also survived by his dearest canine friend, Lily, who meant everything to him. A memorial service will be on Saturday, June 18, 2016, at 11:00 A.M. at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family in Port Leyden Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society 100 Lomond Court, Utica, NY 13502.
