Ava- Irving B. Hawes 69, of State Rt. 26, husband of Mary, passed away at his residence while surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, January 19, 2014. Irv was born in Rome, on October 19, 1944, a son of John and Lillian Crounse Hawes. He grew up in Ava, and graduated from Boonville Central School with the Class of 1963. In 1965, Irv graduated from Canton Agricultural and Technical College with an associate's degree in Automotive Technology. Irv and his brother Pete shared a lifelong interest in Automobiles. Irv was first employed as a mechanic for United Parcel of Syracuse, later he was a car salesman for Sid Stockholm Ford Garage of Rome; after that he was employed as an auto salesman by Cleo Hughes Ford Sales and Service, of Boonville. In October, 1969, Mr. Hawes began his employment with Prudential Insurance Company of Boonville, where he was employed as a life insurance agent throughout Oneida and Lewis Counties. During that time he was promoted to LUTCF designation with Prudential and he also taught various aspects of the insurance business to incoming Prudential employees. He retired from Prudential in 1995. During his retirement he enjoyed working in the woods with Jack McPhilmy, as self employed loggers. On September 18, 1965, Irv was united in marriage with Dorothy Snook at the Taberg United Methodist Church. Mrs. Hawes died on June 14, 1982. On January 31, 1986, Irv was united in marriage with Mary Cannon at the Ava Hilltop United Methodist Church. Mr. Hawes was a member of the Ava Hilltop and the Boonville United Methodist Churches. For many years he taught adult Sunday School classes at both churches and he served as a Lay Speaker at area Methodist Churches. He served as a Trustee of the Ava Hilltop United Methodist Church. In 1970's he served as a councilman on the Ava Town Board. Irv had a keen interest in gas and steam engines. He was a founding member of the Fly Wheels and Pulleys, Inc., the organization that has sponsored the annual Flywheels & Pulleys Old Time Gas and Steam Engine Show in Constableville each September. This organization was founded in 1975, since then Irv had been a very active member of the Flywheels and Pulleys Association. Irv loved his family and visiting with people everywhere; he found a great joy in helping others in a quiet way. He will be fondly remembered for his wonderful strong faith in his Creator, and for his life brightening sense of humor. In addition to his wife, Mary, Irv is survived by one son and daughter in law Jeffrey (Desiree') Hawes, Killeen, TX; two daughters and one son in law, Juliana (Allan) Chrysler, Ava, and Jennifer Hawes, Rome. He was predeceased by a son John L. Hawes and by a daughter Joyce Anne Hawes, both in 1985. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren, Brittany (Nicholas) Hudson, Colorado Springs, CO, Justin and Dylan Hawes, both of TX, and Matthew, Trevor and Michael Chrysler, all of Ava; two great granddaughters, Emily and Olivia Hudson; at the present time, Irv was joyfully anticipating the birth of his third great granddaughter, who will be named Chloe. Additionally Irv is survived by four sisters, Rachel Netzband, Syracuse, Jean Stillman, Avoca, NY, Kathryn Snook, Vancouver, WA, and his twin sister, Elizabeth Ringwald, Ava; and one brother and sister in law, Floyd (Pete) Hawes and Olive, Ava, and nieces and nephews. Irv's Funeral will be Saturday at 10:00 A.M. at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville, with interment in the spring in Ava Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday 6-9 p.m. and Friday 1-4 & 6-9 P.M. at the funeral home.
