May 8, 1956 — July 10, 2023

Boonville – Herbert William Moonan, 67, of West St., passed away on Monday, July 10, 2023 at the Grand Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Rome.

Affectionately known as Herbie, he was born on May 8, 1956 in Constableville, NY, a son of John L. Moonan, Sr. and Evelyn McGee Moonan. He grew up in Boonville, graduating from Adirondack Central School with the Class of 1974. In his younger years he was employed at his parents’ store, Jack’s Footware and Clothing Store in Boonville.

In the late 1970’s Herbie moved to Rochester where he began his career in the restaurant business. He began his employment as a dishwasher and worked his way through the kitchen, ultimately becoming the chef of many restaurants and fine dining establishments in Rochester including the Stone Street Pub, the Irondequoit Country Club, the University Club, and Harry’s. Herbie was also the owner of “Herbie’s Lawrence Street Grill” in Rome. What began as a job turned into a wonderful career, and a lifelong passion for experimenting, trying something new or different, and an appreciation of the culinary arts.

Herbie eventually returned to Boonville, where he assisted his mother in the operation of her income properties business. Herbert was also a talented musician and jazz aficionado. He was the drummer for a couple local bands. In short, Herbie was a man of food, music and the arts.

Herbert is survived by his mother Evelyn, Boonville, brothers: John Jr. (Mary Jo) of Webster, NY, James of Boonville, and William of Rome; Nieces: Cara and Jenna Moonan, and nephew John III (Nicole), several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was predeceased by his father John L. Moonan on December 8, 1965.
