Port Leyden - Henry Richard "Dick" Wheeler, 76, of Canal Street passed away on Sunday January 3, 2021 under the care of Hospice surrounded by the loving care of his family. Henry was born on June 24, 1943 at home in Town of Leyden, NY, a son of the late Hubert & Margret (Crane) Wheeler. He grew up on Family farm on Thayer Hill Road- Graduated from Constableville Central School in the class of 1961. Henry then entered the Army in 1962 to 1965 serving with HQ First Calvary during Cuban Crisis, serving overseas. On June 11, 1966 he was united in marriage to Judith Janes. After honorable discharge from the Army he went on and got his Master Degree at North America School of Conservation. He was employed by Agway Research Center in Tully, NY. He then moved back to Port Leyden and worked for Burrow's Paper Cop Lyonsdale, NY for 31 years. Henry was a long time Charter Medallion of N.Y.S. Sheriff's Assoc. and Institute for kids for Sheriff's camp. Henry enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping with his grandkids. Enjoyed being around his kids, grandkids and great grandchildren. Henry is survived by three children. Melisa (Scott) Eastman of Boonville, Jon (Jody) Wheeler of Boonville, and Shannon (Rob) Carpenter of Boonville. Seven Grandchildren- Tyler (Sam), Brad, Emily (Matt), Joshua (Emilee), Justin, Jolene (Luke), Eric (Tracy). Five Great grandchildren- Alayna, Trenton, Maxwell, Brantley and Barrett. Four sisters; Johanne (Frank) White of Florida, Brenda (Jim) Post Of West Leyden, Becky (Pat) Kulpa Port Leyden, and Dawn Lozovik of Rome. Three brothers Jerry Wheeler of Low Quebec Canada, David (Pat) Wheeler of Wisconsin, Rodney Wheeler of Pennsylvania. Two sister-in-laws Becky (Dan) Mullen of New Hampshire and Susan (Ron) Rockwood of Lowville. Many nieces and nephews. Henry was predeceased by his wife Judith (Janes) Wheeler on January 8, 2018. Both parents Hubert and Margaret Wheeler. Father-in- Law Lenny Janes and mother-in-law Frances Janes. Two brother-in-laws Douglas and William Janes. Calling Hours will be held on Thursday, January 7, from 5:00 - 8:00 pm at the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc., 143 Schuyler St. Boonville, where contact tracing and social distancing will be observed, and all attendees must wear a face covering. Spring Graveside services with military honors will be held in Calvary Cemetery, Port Leyden. Contributions can be made to Friends of Lewis County Hospice Inc., Port Leyden Ambulance Fund or NYS Sheriffs Institute Kids Camp.
