Ava- Helmuth Lincoln Schmeichel, 88, a longtime resident of the Town of Ava, passed away on Tuesday March 1, 2016, at St. Luke's Memorial Hospital, New Hartford, after a short illness. He was born in the Bronx, New York City, on February 12, 1928, a son of William and Alma Weiss Schmeichel. Mr. Schmeichel was raised in the Bronx, later moving to Albany, where he was employed as a carpenter, for Carpenter's Union Local 444, Albany, NY. In 1949, Mr. Schmeichel was honorably discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps; later he transferred to the U.S. Airforce and served his country while stationed in the Viet Nam War. On September 1, 1972, he was honorably discharged with the rank of Tech Sergeant, at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, following 20 years of military service. After his service, Mr. Schmeichel studied at American International College of Springfield, MA, where he received a Bachelors' Degree in Business Administration in 1975. Mr. Schmeichel greatly enjoyed his home near Ava; around that location he partook in activities that he greatly treasured including, hunting, fishing, forestry, gardening, and making wines, jams, jellies and many varieties of canned goods from his garden. Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation on Wednesday, March 9, from 6-7 p.m. at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. where members of the Charles J. Love Post American Legion # 406, the Harland J. Hennessey Post V.F.W. and the Tun Tavern Marine Corps League, all of Boonville, will accord Military Rites. Interment will be in Albany Rural Cemetery, Albany, NY.
