Helen D Chizick

Port Leyden - Helen Chizick, 96, formerly of the East Road, passed away on Wednesday, April 14, 2010, at Lewis County Extended Care Facility, Lowville after a brief illness. A native of Greensburg, PA, she was born on August 12, 1913, a daughter of Frank and Meri (Taras) Donitzen. As a child, Helen moved from PA to Detroit, MI. She was employed in Detroit in the manufacture of household ware. On July 19, 1941 she was united in marriage with James S. Chizick in Detroit. In 1946 the couple moved to Port Leyden. Mr. Chizick, a retiree of Georgia-Pacific Paper Co. of Lyons Falls, died on April 12, 1994. For over twenty years Mrs. Chizick was employed as a cook at the Hulbert House in Boonville, the Towpath Lodge and the Holiday Lodge, both in Turin, and the White Lake Inn. Mrs. Chizick was a member of St. Martin's Church, Port Leyden, Daughters of Isabella, Boonville, Port Leyden Senior Citizens, and the Young At Heart Senior Citizens. For over thirty years she was the sewing leader of the Collinsville Cadets 4-H Club. She was an avid and talented quilter and she greatly enjoyed crocheting. Helen simply loved children. Her greatest love in her life was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She is survived by a son, James F. of Lyndonville, NY; four daughters, Helen McHale of Port Leyden, Barbara Mirabito and her husband, Paul of Norwell, MA, Christine Vollmar and her husband, Gary of Victor, NY, and Cynthia Wiedrick and her husband Thomas of Port Leyden; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren, and a son-in-law, Robert Mayfield of Falls Church, VA. She was predeceased by a daughter, Charlotte Mayfield on January 18, 2002, a granddaughter, Stephanie Ann Mayfield in 1991, and by a son-in-law, James McHale on December 14, 2003. A prayer service will be held Saturday at 9:00 a.m. at the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc., 143 Schuyler Street, Boonville, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. from St. Martin's Church, Port Leyden, where the Rev'd Stephen Gratto, pastor will celebrate. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Port Leyden. Calling hours at the funeral home will be held 5-8 p.m. on Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Martin's Church, Port Leyden.
