Utica- Harold J. Owens, 92, formerly of Rome and Lee Center, passed away on Monday, December 3, 2018, at St. Elizabeths Medical Center, Utica. Harold was born in Ava, on July 24, 1926, a son of Donald B. and Nellie Mae Sasenbury Owens. He grew up in East Ava and in Rome, receiving his education in Ava rural schools. From March, 1945, until his honorable discharge in October, 1946, Mr. Owens served his country in the U.S. Army, in the European Theater of WWII. After the war, Harold returned to Rome and was employed at Oriskany Iron Mill, and at Wilsons Veneer Co. Rome. In December, 1947, Mr. Owens began employment at the former Rome Air Depot, retiring from Griffiss Air Force Base, Maintenance Department, in 1982. Mr. Owens was a member of the Rome V.F.W. On February 28, 1950, Harold married Leona Gleasman, in Schenectady. For many years the couple lived on Streun Road, near Lee Center. Later the couple was divorced and Mr. Owens moved to Rome, where he resided for many years, before making his home with his daughter Cindy and her husband, Frank, in 2014. Harold is survived by two daughters, Linda (John) Brady and Cindy (Frank) LaColla; four grandsons, Shane, Donald, Cody and Matthew and two great great grandchildren, Owen and Kiara. He was predeceased by a brother, Gordon, in 1996, and a sister, Marie, who died as an infant. Calling hours are Thursday from 2-4 P.M. at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville. Funeral Services with Military Honors will be held in the spring, at a time and date to be announced at Ava Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
