Gordon L. Schleicher

Boonville- Gordon L. Schleicher, 92, a longtime resident of Woodgate Drive, husband of Joyce, passed away at his residence on Monday, June 24, 2019, while under the loving care of his wife, family and hospice. Gordon was born in Cold Brook, on May 6, 1927, a son of Leon and Mildred Weaver Schleicher. He grew up in Cold Brook, receiving his education at a rural school, moving to Boonville in 1949. Gordon married the love of his life, Joyce Wheelock, on October 8, 1949, in Boonville. This was a loving and happy union which prospered for nearly 70 years. In March, 1946, Mr. Schleicher enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in WW II, in the Military Police force stateside and on a large ship which transported the last of German Prisoners of WW II, from the United States to Germany. He was honorably discharged at Camp Kilmer, NJ, in April, 1947. After serving his country and moving to Boonville, Mr. Schleicher was employed as a mechanic at C. Hughes Ford Motor Agency. In 1964, he became manager and mechanic at Gordys Mobil Gas and Service Station on Main St. Boonville. In the mid 1970s Gordy began his employment as a heavy equipment operator at Barrett Paving Co., Boonville, later retiring to a forty hour week, after many years at Barrett. Gordy was a longtime active member of Boonville United Methodist Church, where he served for many years as Chairman of the Board of Trustees and on the Administrative Board. He was an active member of the building committee for the construction of the new United Methodist Church building in 1979-1980, later serving on the building committee for the expansion of the church facility. During the Union Block fire in 1963, Gordy volunteered his assistance to the Boonville Fire Company in fighting the fire. Immediately thereafter he became an active member of the fire department, serving for many years before becoming an honorary member of the fire department. Mr. Schleicher was also a member and Past Commander of Charles J. Love Post American Legion and a member of Harland J. Hennessey Post V.F.W. both of Boonville. Gordy greatly enjoyed woodworking and building cupboards in his woodshop. For several winters, he and Joyce greatly enjoyed residing in Lake Wales, Florida. He treasured time spent with his wife and children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and family. In addition to his loving wife, Joyce, Gordy is survived by two sons, Chip and Ina Schleicher, Boonville, Garry and Fianc Melissa Raymond, Durhamville, NY; two daughters and sons in law, Pam and Larry Pfendler and Linda and Hal Fox, all of Boonville; 14 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren; a sister, Beverly Wheelock, Boonville, brother, Bernie Yelton, TN, sister and brother in law, Shirley and Steward Dunn, Boonville and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Paul Yelton, Verle Yelton; two sisters, Mabel Young and Helen Abel, a great grandson, Ryan Flansburg and a great granddaughter, Avery Birgenheier. His Funeral will be on Thursday at 11:00 A.M. at Boonville United Methodist Church, Main St. Boonville, where Pastor Jack Ford will officiate. Interment will follow in Boonville Cemetery, where members of the Charles J. Love Post American Legion, Harland J. Hennessey Post V.F.W. and The Tun Tavern Marine Corps League will accord Military Rites. Calling hours are Wednesday 4-7 P.M. at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville.
