Port Leyden - Gloria L. (Hunkins) LaFountain, 94, widow of Courtney, passed away on June 28, 2021 at the Meadowbrook Terrace Assisted Living Center, Carthage, where she had most recently resided. Gloria was born on December 18, 1926 in Lake Placid, New York a daughter of Roy and Estella Williams Hunkins. Her younger years were spent in Malone, NY before her family relocated to the Mohawk Valley, where she graduated as the Class of 1944 Valedictorian of Sauquoit Valley High School. Gloria then attended Houghton College where she completed her education. For a time, she was employed for General Electric, Utica, before returning to the Wilmington and Jay area of northern Essex County. On June 5, 1948, Gloria was united in marriage with Courtney L. "Corky" LaFountain in Upper Jay, NY. The couple first resided in Lake Placid, before settling in Port Leyden, NY in 1954. Corky a pacific theater veteran of WWII passed away on January 14, 2011. Gloria had a love and passion the proper care and wellbeing of children. Whether it was raising her own children, or when she volunteered for 18 years as a foster grandmother for the Boonville Head Start program, or opening her house to those is need as a foster mother. Her role as a mother warmed her heart and brought her many many cherished memories. Gloria also loved her Lord Jesus Christ. She was a devoted church member all her life, most recently attending Pilgrim Holiness Church, Port Leyden. She is survived by her sons: Courtney LaFountain, Jr. "Corky" (Linda Ellison), Old Forge, David (Emily) LaFountain, Port Leyden, Mark LaFountain (Shelly Gokey), Watson, Timothy (Kathleen) LaFountain, Utica; her daughter Kimberley (William) Coffey, Dalton, NY; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters: Lily Weaver, New Hartford, and Beverly Farr, Port Leyden; her brother Harland Hunkins, Old Forge, and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband Courtney, Sr., she was predeceased by brothers: Robert and Watson Hunkins, and her dear sister-in-law Pheobe Bouger, who was like a sister to Gloria. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 6 at 11:00 am at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville, with interment to follow in Port Leyden Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Monday from 3-7 pm at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to your local head start program to assist with children's activities.
