Gloria A. Babbitt

Carthage - Gloria A. Babbitt, 87, formerly of Fort Covington, NY, passed away suddenly on September 11, 2020 at Carthage Area Hospital. Gloria was born on January 17, 1933 in Fort Covington, a daughter of Sam and Lois Morey Mainville. She grew up in Fort Covington, where she attended Salmon River Central School. Following her education she was married to Marcel Deschamps, later the couple divorced. For a time she was employed at the True-Stitch slipper factory in Bombay. For several years Gloria was employed as an assembler at the General Electric Co., Longwood, FL. While residing in Florida, Gloria was married to Robert Babbitt who has predeceased her. She then returned to Fort Covington, where Gloria was caretaker for her parent's in their later years. Since her return to New York, for 17 years Gloria enjoyed the company of Charles Shattuck who also predeceased her. She enjoyed playing cards and Bingo. Gloria was a lover of all animals, especially cats and dogs. She is survived by her daughters: Bonnie (George) Johnston, York, SC, Shirley Johnston, Orlando, FL; her sons: Joseph (Sharon) Deschamps, Dannemora, Samuel Deschamps, Boonville; 17 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great-grandchildren; and sister Marjorie McElwain, Liverpool. She was predeceased by her sons Noel and Wayne Deschamps, granddaughter Carrie Johnston, great-grandson Christopher Stewart, daughter-in-law: Denota Deschamps, son-in-law: Richard Johnston and sisters: Marilyn Barnes and Karen Mulvana-Roberts. In keeping with Gloria's wishes all services will be held at the convenience of her family. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Cooks Corners, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Gloria's name may be made to the American Heart Association, 120 Lomond Court, Utica, NY 13502, or to the National Breast Cancer Foundation at their website www.nationalbreastcancer.org.
