~~Boonville- Gilbert C. Martin, 72, of Kerwin Road, Town of Leyden, husband of Sue, passed away on Thursday, November 9, 2017, while doing what he loved; being in the woods and harvesting timber. Affectionately known as Gil, he was born in Lowville, on June 20, 1945, a son of Vernon E. and Katherine R. Zehr Martin. He grew up in Croghan, receiving his education at a rural one room school and at Beaver River Central School. Afterwards he began his long and excellent career in logging, working with his fathers logging business. On July 22, 1967, Gil was united in marriage with the love of his life, Susan H. For several years the couple lived in Old Forge, before moving to their present home on the Kerwin Road, in 2002. Gil will also be fondly remembered by others as the great encourager. At the conclusion of his employment with his father, Gil founded Gilbert Martin Logging Co. of Boonville, and earned the title of Certified Woodsman. For several years Gil was one of the leading providers of pulp wood for the Gould Paper Company, Lyons Falls; later until the present time he provided logs for many area sawmills. For a time, Gil and his son, Carl, joined in a partnership known as G. & C. Martin Logging Co. In addition to his church and family, Gil greatly enjoyed playing the sport of soft ball; for many years until recently he participated in many soft ball leagues in Lewis County. He also greatly enjoyed watching his grandchildren play baseball. Gil loved people; he greatly enjoyed spending time with his many friends and playing cards, especially the game of Rook. In addition to his wife of 50 years, Gil is survived by his children and grandchildren, which he loved immensely: Gail and Trent Williams, and their family, Nathanael, Joshua, Caleb, Abigail and husband, Nicholas Argenzia, Rome, Rita and Danny Chamberland and their family, Beka, Jeremiah, and Josiah, Clinton, ME, Peggy and William Oleksy and their family, Austin, Carryn and Brianna, Boonville and Carl and Angela Martin and their family, Mitchell, Ethan, Dawson, Jarrett and Kaitlyn, Boonville.
