Port Leyden – Gerald W. Schaffner, 89, lifelong resident of Port Leyden, and longtime resident of Canal Street, passed away in the comfort of his home on Wednesday, October 26, 2022, while under the loving care of his children.
Gerald was born in West Carthage, NY on February 14, 1933 a son of George and Magdeline Kapfer Schaffner. He received his education at Port Leyden Central School, graduating with the Class of 1951. On March 19, 1953 Gerald entered the US Army and was stationed in Korea serving with the 558th MP Company of the 8th Army. He was honorably discharged on January 28, 1955 and returned home to Port Leyden, NY.
For 45 years Gerald was employed with various union building construction companies. He had an interest in all sports and enjoyed following the Cincinnati Reds baseball team, Syracuse basketball, and watching NASCAR races.
Gerald is survived by his children: Robin (Russell) Roberts, Romona (Jamie) Dosztan, Renita Schaffner (Eric Sampson), Graig (Kelly) Schaffner, and Gary Schaffner; grandchildren: Shane Roberts, Courtney Chrystie, Timmy and Lindsey Schoff, Corey, Cailey and Carson Dosztan, Ciara and Jenna Schaffner; and great-grandchildren: Caysen, Izabel, Maxton, Weston and Emilia. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Richard Schaffner and his Aunt Delaphine Bigeral.
Keeping with Gerald’s wishes all services will be held privately. Interment with military honors will be in Port Leyden Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are in care of the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc., 143 Schuyler St. Boonville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Port Leyden Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box #652, Port Leyden, NY 13433.
