Alder Creek- Gerald Thomas Babcock, 80, passed away on Saturday, February 6, 2021, after a short battle with COVID-19. Affectionately known as Jerry, he was a son of Howard and Edna Kitchen Babcock. He grew up in Rome, graduating from Rome Free Academy with the Class of 1958. On January 5, 1959, Jerry began serving his country in the US Army, Infantry Division, stationed in the United States and in Germany. On March 8, 1962, Mr. Babcock was honorably discharged, transferring to the U.S. Army reserves, serving until his honorable discharge on January 4, 1965. After serving in the Army, he returned to Rome and was employed for 40 years as a machinist at Revere Copper & Brass of Rome. On August 10, 1963, Jerry was united in marriage with Sara (Sally) Babcock, who was his loving wife for 37 years, until she passed away on March 5, 2001. Jerry was an avid hunter and fisherman and an active member of the Boonville Rod & Gun Club. Jerry will be forever and fondly remembered as "Adirondack School's Biggest Sports Fan!" His favorite pastime was attending live sporting events at Adirondack High School, or Adirondack Baseball, Softball, or Trail Blazers Baseball games at the BYAA Ball Field in Boonville. Over the years, Jerry became "a fixture" at our high school gym, football field or ball field, whose presence will be sorely missed. He is survived by his children; Terri (Ricky) Ryan, Jennifer Babcock and Julie (Kurt) DeGraaf. He was predeceased by his eldest daughter, Laura, in 2009. Also surviving are his grandchildren; Colten Grosjean, Hunter Bickham (Brianna), Abby Ryan, (Dylan), Rachel Ryan (Jonathan), Carly Ryan and Shea DeGraaf; great grandchildren, Emalie and Colten Grosjean, Jr; brothers, Gene (Lorraine) and Norman; a sister in law, Joan Phillips, many nieces and nephews and countless friends in the community who knew him as Grampa, Uncle Jerry or simply as "Friend." He was predeceased by four brothers and one sister. Calling hours will be Thursday, February 11, from 4-7 P.M. at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville. Further services will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to either the Adirondack Central High School, Varsity Club, C/O Karen Philbrick at Adirondack Central School, Boonville, NY 13309, or to the Boonville Youth Athletic Association Fund.
