Gary James Smith

October 13, 1945 — April 14, 2006

Gary J. Smith, 60, of Woodhull Road, husband of Barbara R. Smith, passed away Friday, April 14, 2006, at his home after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Gary was born October 13, 1945 in Syracuse, a son of Harold and Audrey Lanphere Smith, and during his school years he moved frequently. After graduating from Westminster High School in California, he joined the U.S. Navy and served in the Viet Nam War. Gary returned from the war with 100% disability. In 1979 he moved from Virginia to Forestport and was united in marriage with Barbara R. Broadbent on February 10, 1979 at Christ Episcopal Church, Forestport. Gary was a member of the Harland J. Hennessey VFW Post, Boonville, the Viet Nam Veterans Association of Lowville, and the Disabled American Veterans of Utica. He greatly enjoyed woodworking, and feeding the ducks and geese. In addition to his wife, Barbara, he is survived by three step-daughters: Mrs. Kirk (Kathryn) Dudek of Dansville, Mrs. Michael (Jocasa) Relf of Barneveld, and Mrs. David (Corina) Howland of Forestport; one step-son: Jeffrey Broadbent and wife Jill of Rome; fifteen grandchildren; one sister: Mrs. Hallie (Holly) Diamond of Woodford, VA; one brother: Mitchell Smith and wife Shirley of Phoenix; three step-brothers: Bruce, Robert, and William Porn; one step-sister: Diana Seybold; and many good friends in the Pople family from the Syracuse area, with whom he grew up. Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm Wednesday at the Trainor Funeral Home, 143 Schuyler St., Boonville, where Pastor Kirk Dudek will officiate at a Memorial Service at the conclusion of calling hours. Members of the Harland J. Hennessey VFW, the Charles J. Love American Legion, and the Tun Tavern Leathernecks Marine Corps League will conduct a service at 7 pm Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment with military honors will be in Beechwood Cemetery, Forestport, at 1 pm Thursday. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to either the Forestport Fire Fighters, Forestport, NY 13338, or to Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 4277 Middle Settlement Road, New Hartford, NY 13413. Garyï¿(TM)s family extends a heartfelt thank you for the excellent care provided to him by Hospice, and the Veteransï¿(TM) Administration Hospitals and Clinics, especially the nurses at the Rome VA Clinic.
