Frances M. Evans

Turin - Frances M. Evans, 96, formerly of West Road, passed away Monday, May 31, 2010 at the Lewis County General Hospital Extended Care Facility, where she had resided since late December 2008. She was born on April 27, 1914 to Henry and Marion (Wynn) Schwenk at the Schwenk Brothers Hotel in Constableville, site of the former Hotel Parquet. She moved at the age of 7 with her widowed mother and four sisters to a small farm named Mount Mariah, located north of the village of Constableville on Route 26, from which they sold butter, cream, and eggs. She walked to the school on West Street in Constableville, and later graduated from Constableville High School. Frances married Charles M. Evans, and in 1933 the couple moved to the Abbie Clark homestead on the West Road in Turin. Frances worked for several years at Snow Ridge Ski Resort as a cashier, and later as cashier at the South Lewis High School cafeteria until her retirement. Frances was a lifetime member of the Turin United Methodist Church, the Dirigo Chapter #390 of the Eastern Star, Turin Civic Club, Constableville Bowling Association and the Turin Grange. She enjoyed socializing, bowling, and crafts, especially knitting and crocheting. Frances is survived by four children, Marilyn Morrow of Keystone Heights, FL, Beverly (Ramon) Myers of Myerstown, PA, Stanley (Nancy) Evans of Lowville, and Alethea (Howard) Cook of Festus, MO; and a daughter-in-law, Theresa Cataldo of Glenfield. She was blessed with 20 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren, step grand and great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Charles in 1998; a son, Charles Henry in 1963; an infant granddaughter, Catherine Ann Evans in 1958; an infant grandson, William John Evans in 1962; sisters Margaret Northam in 1987, Mildred Johnson in 1991, Helen Taylor in 2002, and Loretta Hayes in 2009. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, June 12 at the Turin United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. where the Pastor Billie Jean Melton will officiate. Interment will follow in Turin Cemetery. An hour of visitation will be held from 10-11 a.m. at the church. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the excellent and loving care Frances received while she stayed at the Extended Care Facility.
