Evelyn D. Axtell

October 14, 1918 — February 7, 2015

Port Leyden- Mrs. Evelyn D. (Wood) Axtell, 96, a longtime resident of North Pearl St., widow of Harold D., passed away at her residence, while under the loving care of her family and Lewis County Hospice, on Saturday, February 7, 2015. She was born in Mohawk, NY, on October 14, 1918, a daughter of Jay and Bertha Chrisman Wood. Evelyn grew up in Jordanville, NY, receiving her education at Owen D. Young School, Vanhornsville, where she graduated with the Class of 1936. On September 1, 1937, Evelyn was united in marriage with Harold D. Axtell, in Boonville. In 1938, the couple moved to their present home. Their marriage was a loving union that endured for over 72 years, until Mr. Axtell died on April 20, 2010. Mrs. Axtell found much joy in her role as wife and homemaker. She greatly enjoyed raising her family, cooking, baking and gardening. Evelyn was a talented and gifted seamstress; she excelled in making clothing, curtains and upholstering furniture. She is survived by her five children; Fay LeMay, Canastota, Carolyn Simpson, Boonville, Elaine Minga, Virginia, David Axtell, Port Leyden; and Eugenia and husband David Kogut, Greig. She was predeceased by a son, Richard Axtell, in 1988, a granddaughter, Michele Simpson, her mother and father, and by two sisters, Vivian Smalgalski, and Thelma King. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Her Funeral will be Tuesday at 11:00 A.M. at Calvary Bible Church, Sweeney Road, Greig, where Rev. James Jenkins, Pastor will officiate. Interment will be in Port Leyden Cemetery in the spring. There are no calling hours; however, all are invited to attend the services, a luncheon and time of visiting immediately following her funeral. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to W.M.H.R. Mars Hill Network, 4044 Makyes Road, Syracuse, NY 13215. Her arrangements are in care of Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville.
