Forestport - Ernestine (Worden) Koenig, 94, a longtime resident of North Lake Road, passed away on Saturday, September 25, 2010 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Utica, after a long illness. Ernestine was born in Hinckley on September 8, 1916, a daughter of Ernest and Iona (Clark) Worden. She grew up in the Wheelertown area, attending a local rural school. On April 26, 1934, Ernestine was united in marriage with Otto A. Koenig in Remsen. The couple made their home in Wheelertown until 1944, when Mr. Koenig accepted the position of supervisor of the North Lake reservoir. From then until he retired in 1974, the couple lived in the state house at Atwell (North Lake) where Mrs. Koenig was employed as Postmistress for several years at the U.S. Post Office. At that time the post office at Atwell was the smallest post office in the United States. In 1974 they moved to their present home. Mr. Koenig died on March 23, 1981. For many years Mrs. Koenig was employed as a bookkeeper at her son's business, Koenig Brothers Sawmill, in Forestport. She was a member of Forestport Presbyterian Church, and a fifty-year member of Mappa Salma Chapter O.E.S. Boonville. She loved to knit sweaters, clothing and socks. Ernestine greatly enjoyed cooking, canning and gardening. She loved all animals, especially her beagle dogs. Her greatest joy in life was her family. Ernestine was truly an angel returning to heaven.
