Ellen D. Sullivan

Port Leyden- Ellen D. (Cough) Sullivan, 65, of Kelpytown Road, wife of John Sr., passed away on Monday, December 2, 2024, at Albany Medical Center, Albany, NY, after a brief illness.

Ellen was born in Lowville, on March 26, 1959, a daughter of Frederick A. and Marjorie Mahon Cough. She grew up in the hamlet of Highmarket, where her parents had established the Highmarket Inn. Ellen received her education at Constableville Central School and at South Lewis High School, Turin. She was first employed at Lally Knitting Mill, Port Leyden.

On January 18, 1975, Ellen was united in marriage with John L. Sullivan, Sr., at St. Mary’s Church, Constableville. Afterwards the couple lived in the Port Leyden and Lyons Falls area, until 1986, when they constructed their home at Cough’s Trailer Park, in Kelpytown. In 1988, the couple purchased the trailer park, and changed the name to Sullivan Trailer Park and for many years Mrs. Sullivan was employed as the park manager. After John and Ellen retired, the couple spent winters at Port Charlotte, Florida and summers at Kelpytown.

Ellen possessed a competitive spirit, in all events of her life; she enjoyed a good debate and was also a fierce competitor, who hated to end up on the losing side of a Sport Truck Class race at the Adirondack Speedway, New Bremen, where she won many truck races. She also relished a good competitive truck pull and was the winner of many pulls at the Boonville and Lowville Fairs.

The most important aspect of Ellen’s life was the time spent with her children and grandchildren. Sunday meals at grandma’s will be cherished memories held by everyone.

In addition to her husband, John Sr., Ellen is survived by her children, John L., Jr. (Carrie) Sullivan, Port Leyden, James Sullivan, Port Leyden, Charity (Larry) Hoffert, Port Leyden, Ashley Kloster, Port Leyden; grandchildren, Michael, Janice, Breann, Trentin, Ashtin, Makayla, Chloe; great grandchildren, Mila and Mayson. At the present time, Ellen was joyfully anticipating the birth of her third great grandchild. She was predeceased by a grandson, Ryan Sullivan, in 2020. Also surviving are sisters, Helena Mary, FL, Barbara, Watertown and one brother, John, Port Leyden. Ellen was predeceased by sisters, Suzanne, Catherine and Annette and by brothers, James and Frederick.

In keeping with her wishes, there are no services or calling hours. Interment in the spring, will be at a time to be announced in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Constableville. Her arrangements are in care of Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. Boonville, NY.
