Lyons Falls- Ellen Eileen (Smith) Harvey, 90, of Cherry St., a former longtime resident of McDonald Road, Port Leyden and widow of Jesse A., passed away, on Tuesday, December 24, 2019, at the home of her granddaughter and her husband, Tessa and Brian Greene, Boonville, while surrounded by the loving care of her family and hospice. Ellen was born in the Town of Lyonsdale, on September 3, 1929, a daughter of Wilbert and Ida Vanencourt Smith. She grew up in the village of Port Leyden, where she graduated from high school, with the Class of 1948. On January 11, 1950, Ellen married Gordon E. Fahey, in Port Leyden. Two children, Gordon E. Fahey, Jr. and Rebecca E. Fahey, were born of this marriage. Later the couple was divorced. On December 2, 1977, Ellen was married to Jesse A. Harvey, in Port Leyden. Afterwards the couple lived on McDonald Road, in the home which they built together. It was a home filled with love and happiness, a safe haven with a door that was always open to family, especially their many loving grandchildren. On November 18, 2006, Ellen and Jesse renewed their marriage vows at St. Martin's Church, Port Leyden. Mr. Harvey, owner of Harvey Construction Co., Port Leyden, passed away on June 11, 2008. Mrs. Harvey was employed as a cleaner at Sunset Motel, Old Forge; later for several years Ellen was employed as a food sever and preparer at the cafeteria at South Lewis High School, Turin. For many years, Ellen's favorite occupation was babysitting her many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great granddaughter. She was a member of St. Martin's Church, Port Leyden and also recently attended St. John's Church Lyons Falls. For many years Ellen enjoyed bowling on her family's team, "The Harvey Wallbangers," with her husband, Jesse, brother and sister in law, James and Patricia Smith. For many years she enjoyed her daily trips to Dorrity's Restaurant, Lyons Falls, to visit with her many friends. She loved shopping; cleaning and taking care of her family and attending all of her grandchildren's sporting events and school activities. She also enjoyed putting puzzles together and doing word searches. Her favorite color was purple and her favorite flower was gladiolas. Ellen was a role model, a life lesson in patience, persistence, determination , resilience, giving, caring and so much more. She was the caregiver of the entire family, she was incredibly selfless and put her family's needs before her own. One can only hope to be half as wonderful a women as Ellen was. Ellen greatly loved her family and spending time with her loved ones. She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca E. Fahey (Kelly Simpson), Lyons Falls; daughter in law, Rae Fahey, Port Leyden, an ex-son in law, David Ferguson,(her right hand man), six beloved grandchildren, Tessa (Brian) Greene, Heather (Ryan) Brown, David (Misty) Ferguson, Jason (Jaclyn) Fahey, Aaron Fahey, Jeremy Fahey; five great grandchildren, Mariah Mashaw, Mitchell Mashaw, (predeceased on August 26, 2014), Cooper Brown, Tucker Brown and Elizabeth Fahey and one great great granddaughter, Hayven Mashaw. Also surviving is a brother, John Smith, Port Leyden. She was predeceased by her son, Gordon E. Fahey, Jr. on August 26, 2016 and by brothers, Phillip Daniel Smith and James "Mickey" Smith. Services will be Saturday, January 4, 2020, at 9:30 A.M. at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. Boonville, and at 10:30 A.M. at St. Martin's Church, where Rev. Lawrence Marullo, pastor, will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial. A spring interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Port Leyden. Calling hours are Friday, January 3, from 3-7 P.M. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Friends of Lewis County Hospice, P.O. Box 266, Lowville, NY 13367, or to Lewis County Office for the Aging, 5274 Outer Stowe St. Lowville, NY 13367. A reception will immediately follow the Mass of Christian Burial, on Saturday, January 4, at the Port Leyden Fire Hall, where contributions of food may be taken on Saturday from 9:00 A.M. on.
