Port Leyden- Elaine J. (Carpenter) Dexter, 67, of West Main St., wife of Lowell F. passed away after a long illness, on Thursday, September 26, 2013, at her residence, while surrounded by the loving care of her family and Lewis Co. Hospice. She was born in Barretts Corners, on September 15, 1946, a daughter of William F. and Marian Leichty Carpenter. Later, as a child she moved with her family from Locust Grove to the Carpenter homestead farm on the Bailey Road, Constableville. Elaine attended Constableville Elementary School and Constableville High School through the 11th grade, before completing her education as the first class of graduates from the new South Lewis Central School, Tuirn, with the Class of 1964. Thereafter for over 20 years, she was employed as a seamstress at Lally Manufacturing Co. of Port Leyden. Elaine was united in marriage with Lowell F. Dexter, on October 29, 1966, at Mt. Carmel Church, Utica. In 1967 the couple settled in Port Leyden, where they have since lived. Mrs. Dexter was a member of St. Martin's Church, Port Leyden. She loved her two cats, Fluffy and Missy and enjoyed being a Yankee Fan, and crafting jewelry which she loved giving to her family and friends. In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Darren L. Dexter, Port Leyden; her mother, Marian Carpenter, Constableville; four brothers, William (Pat) Carpenter, John (Janette) Carpenter, Clint (Melissa) Carpenter, all of Boonville, Ned (Becky) Carpenter, Constableville; three sisters, Rosalie White, Boonville, Susan (Tim) LaRoy, and Jacqueline Carpenter and Kim Felshaw, all of Constableville. She was predeceased by her father, William, in 1987, a brother, Brad, in 1975, and a sister, Christine Elizabeth, in 1973. Also surviving is a sister in law, Cherie Mashaw, Boonville; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. A prayer will be Tuesday at 9:45 A.M. at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 A.M. at St. Martin's Church, Port Leyden, where Rev. Lawrence Marullo, Pastor, will officiate. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Port Leyden. Calling hours are Monday 4-8 P.M. at the funeral home.
