Town of Steuben - Edward Nasuta, Jr., born on April 26, 1947, passed to be with the Lord, family and friends on Saturday, February 19, 2011, at his residence, while surrounded by his loving family and friends, after a lengthy, devastating illness. Edd was inspirational during his illness and conviction to live his last months and final moment on this earth "his way" and acceptance of his choices. Edd chose to protect others from worrying about him and found peace with those that accepted him realistically and unconditionally. He was born in Utica, a son of Edward and Kazmer (Kazek) Nasuta, Sr. He grew up in Utica and graduated from Utica Free Academy. While in Utica, he was a member of the Utica Drum and Bugle Corps. From 1964 until his honorable discharge in 1970, Edd served in the U.S. Navy, as a Navy Corpsman, assigned to the U.S. Marines during the Viet Nam Era. He was on active duty until 1968 and then served in the U.S. Navy Reserves. After his military services he was employed at the Utica Psychiatric Center, while attending nursing school at Upper Division College, where he earned his Bachelor's degree in nursing. He had also attended SUNY Oswego, where he earned credits toward a Bachelor's degree in education. For thirty years Mr. Nasuta was employed as a registered nurse, and as a Nursing Administrator at Central New York Psychiatric Center, Marcy, NY. On January 7, 1978 Edd was married to Mary Ann Dowling. Later they were divorced. They remained close friends, however, and during his illness, Mary Ann was his patient advocate and health care provider. He was a member of the Utica and Boonville Elks Lodge. He owned the Alder Creek Sports Shop, and was an avid hunter and a licensed firearms dealer. He found much pleasure and satisfaction in restoring his old farmhouse on Bethel Road. Everyone who knew Edd, love him or not, knew he spoke his mind, like it or not. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and splitting wood. Edd is and was the epitome of a stubborn man. He was told he had only days to live in October 2009, but he had plans that proved his "will" defying medical barriers. He is survived by his loved one, Mary Ann Nasuta, his soul mate and his chosen advocate to honor his choices for his dignity; his daughter and son-in-law, Amanda Groben and Jacob of Clinton; his son and daughter-in-law, Aaron and Theresa Nasuta; grandchildren; aunts; friends and loved ones. He loved his "cousins in the North Country", namely the Caprons, Kazeks and Samsons, his coffee buddies, Bob Z, Mile, Eileen and Kayla; Ted and Diane; his "family" across the street; Fran L. and Jan S.; Joyce and Wally D.; and his hunting buddies. Edd was aware of the outcome and did not waste his remaining time in debates. "I'm doing it my way; there is no debate." He expressed thanks many times for all his special people throughout his life, but Edd spared many to be remembered as he was, a gentle giant at home. Edd the miracle happened, Rest in Peace! In keeping with his wishes, there will be no calling hours. Services will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans or to Oneida County Hospice, 4277 Middle Settlement Road, New Hartford, NY 13413.
