~~Port Leyden- Earl Axtell, 87, of East Main St., husband of Jane, passed away, after a brief illness on Monday, August 21, 2017, at Lewis County General Hospital, Lowville, while surrounded by the loving care of his wife and family. Earl was born in Starkville, NY, (Montgomery County), on January 26, 1930, a son of Glenn D. and Eugenia Cable Axtell. At the age of seven, he moved with his family to Moose River Road, near Port Leyden, where he grew up. Earl graduated from Port Leyden Central School, with the Class of 1949. On August 10, 1949, he married Jane M. Croneiser, in St. Martins Church, Port Leyden. After their marriage the couple purchased a dairy farm on State Rt. 26, near Turin, which they operated for several years. Later they purchased a dairy farm on Rt. 12 D in the Town of Leyden, which they operated until 1974, when the couple retired from farming and moved to Port Leyden. For many years thereafter, Mr. Axtell operated a cattle trucking business. From the 1970s until 2007, he was employed as caretaker for Port Leyden Cemetery and later at Calvary Cemetery, Port Leyden. Mr. Axtell was a member of St. Martins Church, Port Leyden. He greatly enjoyed hunting, playing the guitar and spending time with his family at their camp. Earl dearly loved his wife, Jane and his daughters; one of his most treasured expressions was Mom and the girls and was known by his grandchildren as Grandpa Guzzle! In addition to his wife, Earl is survived by five daughters, Bonnie (Jim) Easton, Lyons Falls, Janette (John) Carpenter, Boonville, Beth Axtell, Ravena, NY, Jean (Dean) Bissell, Voorheesville, Mary (Joe) Legnetto, Syracuse; many grandchildren, Scott Howanietz, Rebecca Howanietz, Stefan (Cari) Howanietz, Catie Howanietz, Brad (Jennifer) Carpenter, Robert (Jessica) Carpenter, Chad Carpenter, Kristin (James) VanAlstine, Brittany Axtell, Brianna Bissell, Clarke Bissell, Bailee Legnetto, Kaylee Legnetto; fifteen great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Lindsey Legnetto. He was predeceased by three brothers, Myron Axtell, Harold Axtell and Walter Axtell; and two sisters, Beatrice Ripple and Edith Rocker. A Prayer Service will be Thursday at 10:00 A.M. at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 A.M. at St. Martins Church, Port Leyden, where Rev. Lawrence Marullo, pastor will officiate. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Port Leyden. Calling hours are 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
