Croghan – Douglas A. Bourgeois, 72, former longtime resident of Denley Road, Boonville, passed away on Friday, November 22, 2024 in the comfort of his home in Croghan, where he had resided for the past year.


Douglas was born on November 12, 1952, in Boonville, a son of Donald A. and Avis Hutchins Bourgeois. He was raised on the Bourgeois homestead farm in Denley, and received his education at Port Leyden and South Lewis Central Schools. From 1973 until 1985 Douglas was employed at Bailey’s Feed Mill in Boonville, and for a time was employed with Lyons Falls Tire. Douglas then opened his own business Bourgeois Tire, which he operated with his son Jessie, traveling around to area farms changing tractor and heavy equipment tires.


His Catholic faith was an integral part of his everyday life. He believed in paying-it-forward and enjoyed contributing to various organizations to help under privileged children and those in need. He enjoyed history, watching old western movies, and will fondly be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor and wit. He loved joking around and had a nickname for everyone!


Douglas is survived by his daughter: Kai (Sean) Powers and their children Kinley and Parker, all of Rome. He was predeceased by his son Jessie J. Bourgeois on June 28, 2023. Also surviving are siblings: Don, Karl, and Brian Bourgeois, Bernadette Levesque, and Christine Longway, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by sisters: Irene Batzinger and Anne Hartley.


A Memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday, December 4, at 11:00 am at St. Martin’s Church, Port Leyden with Rev. Daniel Chapin officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Port Leyden. In keeping with his wishes there will be no calling hours. A celebration of life is being planned and will be announced at a later time. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Martin’s Church, P.O. Box #431, Port Leyden, NY 13433, or to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
