Westernville- Richard R. Smith, 82, of Coleman Road, husband of Janet and affectionately known as “Dick,” passed away on Sunday, December 31, 2023, at his residence while under the loving care of his wife, family and hospice.
Dick was born in Rome, on March 24, 1941, a son of Ralph W. and Kathryn Moskin Smith. A lifelong resident of the Town of Western, he grew up on the Smith homestead farm on Quaker Hill Road. He attended a one-room school house, before attending Holland Patent Central School and graduating with the Class of 1958. After graduation, Dick joined his father and brother in the operation of the family farm operation.
On July 28, 1962, Dick was united in marriage with Janet R. Graves at the North Western Methodist Church.
In 1970, he became a substitute school bus driver for Holland Patent Central School, in addition to his farm work. He retired from bus driving in 2001.
Dick was a man of simple pleasures, finding great joy in the routine of his daily life on the dairy farm which he operated. He also enjoyed being a member of a Pinochle Club for about 50 years and he was a member of The Oneida Polka League.
In addition to his wife, Janet, of 61 years, Dick is survived by his daughter Diane (Todd) Sokoloff and son, Gordon and two grandsons, Evan (Cassandra) and Adam Sokoloff. He is also survived by his three brothers: Joe (Elaine), Garry, and Ron (Sharon), and his sister Marie (Brian) Billings. He was predeceased by his parents Ralph and Kitty Smith.
Relatives and friends are invited to graveside services on Monday, June 10, 2024 at 11:00 am in Westernville Cemetery, with Rev. Robert Wollaber officiating. Memorial Contributions may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc. 4277 Middlesettlement Road, New Hartford, NY 13413.
