Deforest C. Flansburg

December 19, 1934 — April 13, 2007

Deforest C. "Bud" Flansburg, 72, a resident of Kotary Road, and founder of D.& J. Flansburg Logging Co. of Fish Creek, passed away at this residence early this morning, Friday, April 13, 2007, while under the care of his loving family and Lewis Co. Hospice. Deforest was born on in Canajoharie, December 19, 1934 a son of Deforest A. and Jane Jackson Flansburg. He grew up in the vicinity of Lyons Falls, and was educated in a rural school, then attending General Martin School in Glenfield, and he received his high school GED while serving in the U.S.Army. After that he served in the U.S Army from 1957 until his honorable discharge in 1965. On April 4, 1959, Deforest was united in marriage with Rita G. Samson at Ft. McClellan, Alabama. Upon his return to civilian life, the couple settled on the Millers Woods Road near Boonville, where he entered into a partnership with his brothers, known as Flansburg Bros. Logging. In 1972 the couple moved to Kotary Road where he founded Deforest Flansburg Logging Co. In 1975, he began employment for Adirondack Central System as a bus driver and custodian. In 1985 his sons Deforest and James purchased the timber business. Mrs. Flansburg died on March 28, 2006. Mr. Flansburg was a member of St. Peterï¿(TM)s & Paulï¿(TM)s Church of Fish Creek, a life member of Boonville Elks Lodge # 2158, a life member of the National Rifle Association, and a member of Charles J. Love Post American Legion, Boonville. He greatly enjoyed raising his white face cattle, his fire wood and hunting with his sons. He also enjoyed entering log trucks in the annual Woodsmenï¿(TM)s Field Days parade, an annual summer event held in Boonville. Bud with other timber producers from this area was a founding member of Northeastern Loggersï¿(TM) Association, Inc., an organization dedicated to the betterment of the forestry industry in New York. During his membership in this association, faculty from SUNY Forestry Colleges visited his logging site to observe modern logging operations. He is survived by his mother, Jane Flansburg, Boonville, three sons and daughters in law; Deforest M. Flansburg, and Denise, James C. Flansburg, both of Fish Creek, Thomas Flansburg, and Julie, Constableville, two daughters and sons in law; Joy Marie Nellenback, and Jeffrey, West Leyden, Kimberly Ann Pate, and Bernard "Beaver" Turin, and nine grandchildren. He was predeceased by two grandsons: Robert Michael Flansburg, on September 2, 1990, and by Philip Joseph Flansburg, on December 17, 2002. Deforest is also survived by two brothers and sisters in law; Duane and Eileen Flansburg, Camden, Thomas and Pat Flansburg, Constableville, two sisters Wanetta Norton, Boonville, Jeanette Colasanti, New Hartford, two sisters in law; Belinda Flansburg, Boonville, and Colleen Flansburg, Lyons Falls. He was predeceased by his father Deforest on October 15, 1998, two brothers; Gerald on July 1, 1997, and James on June 15, 2002. His funeral will be Monday at 9:30 A.M. at the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc., 143 Schuyler St. Boonville, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 A.M. at St. Peterï¿(TM)s Paulï¿(TM)s Church of Fish Creek, where Rev. Lawrence Marullo will officiate. Interment will be later this spring in St. Peterï¿(TM)s & Paulï¿(TM)s Cemetery, Fish Creek.
