Courtney L. '"Corky"' Lafountain

Port Leyden - Courtney L. LaFountain, 87, of Fowlerville Road, affectionately known as "Corky" passed away at his residence on January 14, 2011. He was born in Au Sable Forks (Essex County), New York, on February 14, 1923, a son of Edgar Joseph and Bertha (Smith) LaFountain. He grew up in Upper Jay, receiving his education in Upper Jay and Au Sable Forks. On January 28, 1943, Mr. LaFountain entered the U.S. Army, serving in the 491st Court Battalion Co. B, stationed on New Guinea, in the Pacific Theater of WWII. On January 8, 1946, Mr. LaFountain was honorably discharged from the service at the rank of Technician Fifth Grade, Dock Boss. After his military service he returned to employment as an Adirondack woodsmen. Later he was employed as a truck driver for Ted Egnaczyk at Central Adirondack Dairy in Boonville, and for the town of Lyonsdale Highway Department. He retired in 1976 due to health reasons, and then for several years he was employed as an outreach worker for Lewis Co. Office for the Aging. On June 5, 1948, Courtney was united in marriage with Gloria Hunkins in Upper Jay. The couple moved to their present home in the town of Lyonsdale in 1954, where they have since lived. Mr. LaFountain had attended New Covenant Church, Port Leyden. He was a member of Harland J. Hennessey Post VFW Boonville, and the North American Fishing Club. For many years he was an avid fisherman. In addition to his wife, Gloria, he is survived by five children, Courtney, Jr. ("Corky") and Linda Ellison of Old Forge, David and Emily LaFountain of Port Leyden, Mark and Sheila LaFountain of Lyons Falls, Timothy and Kathleen LaFountain of Utica, and Kimberly and William Coffey, Jr. of Dalton, NY; thirteen grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; a sister, Phoebe Bougor of Au Sable Forks; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Edgar Douglas, George ("Sonny") and Barney; and four sisters, Geneva LaRue, Betty Ranckor, Vivian Reyell, and Mexicali Sprague. His funeral will be Monday at 1:00 p.m. at the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc., 143 Schuyler Street, Boonville, where Rev. William A. Mudge will officiate. Interment in the spring with military honors will be in Port Leyden Cemetery. Calling hours are Sunday 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home, and Monday from 11:00 a.m. until the funeral. Memorial contributions may be made to either the Port Leyden or Lyons Falls Fire Co. Ambulance Funds.
