Charles L. Levensailor

Port Leyden-Charles L. Levensailor, 85, of River Road, a veteran of WWII, and husband of Helen, passed away at his residence on Friday, May 2, 2008. A native of Port Leyden, he was born on October 29, 1922, a son of Leonard L. and Blanche Windecker Levensailor. He grew up in the Town of Lyonsdale, and attended the Little Red School House on Moose River. After that he was employed in a state reforestation project in Lewis County. Mr. Levensailor expressed a life long attitude of love and patriotism for his country, and on January 2, 1943, he began his service to his country by entering the U.S. Army, where he served in the South Pacific Theater of WW II. During that period he was in the 470th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion. With this unit, PFC Levensailor participated in the battles and campaigns of Luzon, New Guinea, and Bismarch-Archipelago, in the Southern Philippines. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, Bronze Arrowhead, Good Conduct Medal, a Presidential Unit Citation with 1 Bronze Star and a WWII Victory Medal. Mr. Levensailor was honorably discharged from the army on January 4, 1946. Following the war, he returned to Port Leyden and was employed at the Georgia-Pacific Veneer Mill at McKeever, until the mill closed. After that for many years, he was employed at Boonville Division of Ethan Allen Furniture Co. in the sanding and furniture repair divisions, retiring in 1983. His first wife, Cassie Imerson, died in 1947. On July 19, 1950, Mr. Levensailor was united in marriage with Helen Bourgeois at the Rectory of St. Martin's Church of Port Leyden. After that the couple moved to their present home on the River Road, near Port Leyden. Mr. Levensailor was a member of Harland J. Hennessey Post V.F.W., Boonville. He was an avid deer and rabbit hunter, and he raised beagle dogs for rabbit hunting. He loved the out doors, and greatly enjoyed his camp that was located on Moose River on the original Levensailor homestead. In addition to his wife, Helen, he is survived by four sons: Randy L. Levensailor, Port Leyden, Leonard V. Levensailor, and wife, Debbie, Troy, Charles L. Levensailor, and wife Phylliss, Boonville, Arnold J. Levensailor, and wife, Heather, Port Leyden, three daughters; Debra Ann Millard, and husband, Robert, Rome, Sharon I. McDougall, and husband, Jeffrey, Phoenix, NY, Cassie M. Smith, and husband, Shawn, Port Leyden, nineteen grandchildren, four great grandchildren, one brother, Warren Levensailor, and wife, Claris, Port Leyden. He was predeceased by two sisters, Blanche Irene Levensailor, and Betty J. Graves. His Funeral will be Tuesday at 11:00 A.M. at the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc., 143 Schuyler St. Boonville, where Rev. Jeremy McDougall, a grandson of Mr. Levensailor, and pastor of First Baptist Church of South Glens Falls will officiate. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Port Leyden, where members of the Harland J. Hennessey Post V.F.W., Charles J. Love Post American Legion, and the Tun Tavern Marine Corps League all of Boonville, will conduct military rites. Calling hours are Monday 7-9 P.M. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Port Leyden Fire Company.
