Charles A. Lewis, 94, a former resident of North George St. Rome, and East Main St. Port Leyden, passed away on Friday, January 11, 2008, at Rome Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility, where he had resided since 2006. Mr. Lewis was born in Burlington, N.J. on July 13, 1913, a son of George and Mary Shinn Lewis. He graduated from Burlington High School, and for many years was employed as a road salesman selling ice, dairy products, for the Borden Co. of Burlington, and bakery products. On October 29, 1935, Mr. Lewis was united in marriage with Elizabeth Risley, at St. Barnabas Church, Burlington, NJ. In 1993, the couple moved to Whitton Place Apartments in Port Leyden, to reside near his son, The Reverend Richard H. Lewis, who was at that time the Rector of Headwaters Mission of Episcopal Churches, located in Boonville, Constableville, and Port Leyden. Charles was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Port Leyden. For many years he greatly enjoyed operating his business of refinishing furniture, and the caning of chairs. Mr. Lewis is survived by three sons: The Rev. Richard H. Lewis, P. Wayne Lewis, Charles S. Lewis, one daughter; Cindy M. Zoll, eight grandchildren, several great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, "Libby," Lewis, a brother George, and by his sisters Elizabeth Higgins, Louise Fairbanks, and by a grandson. There are no calling hours. Graveside services and interment will be in St. Mary's Episcopal Church Yard Cemetery, Burlington, NJ., at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to the building fund of the Rome First United Methodist Church, 400 North George St. Rome, NY 13440.
