Channing R. '"Chan"' Willoughby

Boonville - Channing R. "Chan" Willoughby, 79, of Harvey Place, passed away Saturday, October 30 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center after a short illness. He was born in Boonville on March 3, 1931, a son of Ralph and Mildred (Reinhuber) Willoughby. Chan lived in and attended school in Camden, prior to returning to Boonville, where he graduated from Boonville High School with the Class of 1949. He then attended State University at Oswego. He was employed by Eastern Rock Products, Boonville, during the construction of the runway at the former Griffiss Air Force Base. He was later employed for 29 years as a typesetter in compositing at Canterbury Press in Rome, eventually retiring in March 1991. On October 17, 1953, Chan was united with marriage with Charlotte Capron at the Boonville United Methodist Church. This was a close and very loving union enduring 57 years. The couple made their home in Rome, where Mr. Willoughby was active in the Rome BPOE Lodge #96, where he served as lodge Secretary for several years. He was also named Elk of the Year for 1973-74. In 1975 Chan and Charlotte returned to Boonville, where he was active in the Boonville BPOE Lodge #2158, serving as Treasurer for many years. Chan played golf in several leagues in Rome and Boonville; he especially enjoyed the Thursday morning league. He and Charlotte together enjoyed a great love of boating, and were able to spend many hours on the Fulton Chain this past summer. They boated in many Adirondack Lakes and spent several years boating on the St. Lawrence River. He also enjoyed gardening and working outside on home projects. In addition to his loving wife Charlotte, he is survived by a sister-in-law and her husband, Dianne and Ben Daskiewich, and a brother-in-law and his wife, George and Laurie Capron, all of Boonville; a niece, several nephews, and two cousins. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a graveside service on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Boonville Cemetery, where Rev. William A. Mudge, pastor of Boonville United Methodist Church will officiate. There are no calling hours. Flowers are gratefully declined; instead, memorial contributions may be made to Lewis County Humane Society, 6388 Pine Grove Road, Glenfield, NY 13343, or to the Erwin Library, Schuyler Street, Boonville, NY 13309.
