Boonville - Carol Hansen, age 79, of Boonville and formerly of Old Forge, passed away on Sunday, November 27, 2016 at her residence. She was born in Pierce City, Missouri on February 12, 1937, the daughter of Cecil and Mildred Peterson Moore. She attended Missouri schools before moving to Utica in 1952 where she attended Procter High School and graduated with the class of 1955. She married Jon Hansen at St. John the Evangelist Church in New Hartford on November 22, 1958, later moving with her husband and three children to Old Forge in 1971. She was most recently employed by The Weekly Adirondack Newspaper in Old Forge as a staff writer and photographer, and previously worked for the Adirondack Express Newspaper in Old Forge. At one time she owned and operated Carol's Liquor Store in Old Forge. She was also employed as circulation manager at the Northern Logger and Timber Processor Magazine for a number of years, and as administrative assistant to the Old Forge office of the Adirondack Park Agency before the local APA office closed in 1980. From 1972 to 1976 she was Librarian of the Old Forge Library and continued to devote her time and attention to the library, serving 30 years on the Old Forge Library Board as a trustee, recording secretary, and past president. In 2006 she returned to work at the library part time before retiring from there in 2011. Two of her articles about Old Forge appeared in Adirondack Life magazine in the 1980s. Another article about her trip alone across Siberia on the Trans Siberian Express in 1988 appeared in the Travel Section of the Syracuse Herald Journal. She gave many slide presentations describing her Siberian Journey to area organizations, as well as the local library and to the Town of Webb School. She also presented programs describing her experiences in 1990 while living with Russian families in Moscow and Leningrad (now St. Petersburg). She wrote an historical novel, "Whispers in the Wind," about the Russian Civil War of 1918-1922, which followed the Revolution. It was translated into Russian and published by St. Petersburg University in 2006. A copy of the Russian translation of the book is on the stacks in the Old Forge Library. For many years Carol was a parishioner at St. Bartholomew's Church, Old Forge, since moving to Boonville, she attended St. Joseph's Church, Boonville. Besides Jon, her husband of 58 years, she is survived by two daughters, Kelly and son in law Tim Santamour of Floyd, and Susan Hansen of New Haven, CT, and her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Christine Hansen of Westmoreland. She is also survived by three sisters and brothers-in-law, Patricia and John Jeter, Banning, CA; Rosemary and Michael Sciortino, Virginia Beach, VA; Michele and Richard Moore, Mesa, AZ. She leaves granddaughters, Sheila Stine, Hollie Haley and Erika Hansen Doolen . She also leaves her grandson Avery Jon Hansen, and great-grandson, Nathan (Nate) Haley. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother Michael Moore of Tuscon, AZ and her beloved granddaughter, Alyssa Carol Hansen, who passed away in 2007. In addition, she leaves the many Russian friends she continued to correspond with after becoming friends during her three Russian journeys. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, November 30, at 10:00 A.M. at Christ Our Hope parish at St. Joseph's Church, Charles St. Boonville, with Rev. Thomas A. Ward, pastor, as celebrant. There will be no calling hours; however, her family will greet friends at the church at the conclusion of the Mass. Interment will be in Westmoreland Union Cemetery, Westmoreland, beside her granddaughter, Alyssa Hansen. Memorial contributions may be made to Old Forge Library, Crosby Blvd. Old Forge, NY 13420.
