Carlton Gruby

Carlton Gruby, Jr., 66, of South Street, passed away Wednesday, October 31, 2007, at Rome Memorial Hospital after a very short illness. Carl was born April 30, 1941, a son of Carlton and Catherine Perry Gruby, in Rome where he grew up and attended school. In 1958 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Germany until his honorable discharge in 1962, then serving in the Army Reserves for many years. On September 25, 1963 he was united in marriage with Jane M. Slawson in Turin. The couple resided in North Western before moving to Webster Hill Road, Boonville. Carl had been employed at Revere Copper & Brass, Rome, for over 40 years as a machinist. Jane died May 24, 2004. He was a member of the Charles J. Love American Legion Post 406, Boonville. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, and enjoyed driving his boat and fishing. He is survived by three daughters: Cora M. Anna of Boonville, Roxanne M. Gruby-Pavulans and her husband Aldis of Front Royal, VA, and Renee K. Biro of Boonville; one son: Carlton Gruby IV of Rome; four grandchildren: Samantha Anna, Amanda and husband PFC David Marmon, Brett and Hunter Biro; one great-granddaughter: Alexis Jane Marmon; three sisters: Priscilla Gruby, Charlene Amberg, and Mrs. James (Melissa) Dinco, all of Rome; special family friends: Val Mendoza, Donald Schwertfeger, Merry Tuttle, Alex Pollard, Jr. and many others too numerous to mention; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Kayla Biro, two brothers, Charles Gruby and Gale Smith, a sister, Cora Mae Gruby, and a nephew, Joseph Amberg. The funeral service for Mr. Gruby will be at 11:00 am Monday at the Boonville United Methodist Church, Main Street, Boonville, with Rev. William A. Mudge and Pastor Joan Ripp officiating. Interment will follow with military honors in Ava Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm Sunday at the Trainor Funeral Home, 143 Schuyler St., Boonville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Finger Lakes Donor Recovery Network, Corporate Woods of Brighton, Bldg. 30, Suite 220, Rochester, NY 14623.
