Boonville - Carl R. Szot, M.D., 77, of Schuyler Street, a widely known physician in central and upstate New York, passed away at his residence on Monday, February 1, 2010 while under the loving care of his wife and family. Dr. Szot was born in Boonville on December 5, 1932 to John C. and Victoria (Daskiewich) Szot. He graduated from Boonville Central School in 1950 and attended LeMoyne College, earning his Bachelor of Science degree in 1954. He was awarded his Medical Doctor degree cum laude from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Dr. Szot married Margaret Weis in Pittsburgh, PA on April 23, 1960. Mrs. Szot died on February 25, 1998. Dr. Szot was married to Inez H. McIntyre on March 4, 2000. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force from 1960-1962, functioning as Chief of the Department of Medicine at Seymour Johnson AFB in Goldsboro, NC. Dr. Szot ran his private practice in Boonville from 1962 until he retired in 2003. During a medical career that spanned over forty years he also practiced in the Emergency Department at the former St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Utica and (in general practice) at Lewis County General Hospital in Lowville. Dr. Szot was a member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Boonville, Boonville Council Knights of Columbus, Charles J. Love Post American Legion and the Erwin Library Board. His professional memberships included: American Academy of Family Practice, Medical Society of State of NY, Central NY Academy of Medicine and Alpha Omega Alpha. Dr. Szot had formerly served as Oneida County Coroner, South Lewis Central School Physician, and as Health Officer for the Lewis County towns of Lewis, Leyden, Turin, West Turin and Lyonsdale, and the villages of Port Leyden, Lyons Falls and Turin. Dr. Szot enjoyed the outdoors; he loved his fishing trips with his friends to northern Canada, hunting, gardening, and burning firewood. Carrying on the tradition set by his mother, he was a very talented cook, and greatly enjoyed this hobby. He deeply loved his wife and family. Survivors include four sons and their wives, Dr. Carl R. and Ann Szot of Keene, NH, John and Katherine Szot of Madison, WI, Dr. Joseph and Julie Szot of Tiffin, IA, and Thomas and Elaine Szot of West Spring, IL; three daughters and a son-in-law, Mary Macbeth of Boonville, Victoria Szot of Randolph, NJ, and Susan and James McAuley of Franklinville, NY; fourteen grandchildren; a sister, Felicia Szot of Boonville; three stepsons, Mark McIntyre of Port Leyden, and Todd and Nadine McIntyre and Eric and Susan McIntyre, all of Boonville; four step grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, John C. Szot, in 1990. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, Charles Street, Boonville, officiated by the Rev'd Sean Patrick O'Brien. Interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Boonville. Visitation is Thursday 1-4 and 6-9 p.m. at the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc., 143 Schuyler Street in Boonville. Memorial contributions may be made to Charles J. Love Post # 406 American Legion (Wheelchair & Bed Fund), 124 East Schuyler Street, St. Joseph's Church Memorial Fund, 110 Charles Street, or Erwin Library, 104 Schuyler Street, all Boonville, NY 13309.
