Sauquoit - Carl G. Smith, 96, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Monday, July 4, 2011. Carl was born in Utica, on May 1, 1915, a son of the late Robert E. and Louise (Weigel) Smith. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 71 years, Margaret Davis Smith. Carl was a graduate of Sauquoit Valley High School and was employed by the Erie-Lackawana Railroad for 38 years, following in the footsteps of his father. Carl served as a member of the Isaac-Walton League, a wildlife and land preservation society. He imparted his love of nature, fishing and hunting, and his knowledge of birds, trees, flowers and gardening to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He especially cherished time spent with his family. Carl believed it was important to enjoy life, enjoy all there is, as life goes by too quickly. He is survivied by his loving wife, Margaret of Sauquoit; a son, Thomas C. Smith and his wife Yvonne of Waterville and their children, Kail Smith of West Edmeston, Ryan Smith of Vernon Center, and Kelly Smith of New York Mills; a daughter, Beatrice L. Morgan and her husband Frederick of Remsen, and their children; Tamra Ryan and her husband Michael of Simsbury, CT and Colleen Morgan of Mamaroneck, NY; great grandchildren, Morgan, Peter and John Ryan Simsbury, CT; sisters-in-law, Yoshiko Davis and Ruth Smith as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins; special friends, Miyoko Karn, Donald Weigel, and Mirsada Krupic. Carl was predeceased by his four brothers, Orlo, Kenneth, Glenn and Wesley. In keeping with Carl's wishes there will be no calling hours, private interment services will be at the convenience of the family at St. Mary's Cemetery, Clayville.
