Town of Western - Burton E. Alger, 68, a retired dairy farmer and former resident of the Oatman Road and more recently a resident of Webster Hill Road, passed away Tuesday at his residence following a long illness while surrounded by his loving family. A native of Oxford, located in Chenango County, he graduated from Oxford High School, and was next employed by T.J. Madden Construction Co., working on road construction in the Boonville area. On February 4, 1961, Mr. Alger was united in marriage with Mary Hartness at St. Martin's Church, Port Leyden. The couple lived in Boonville until 1969, when they moved to the former Oatman Farm in the Town of Western, which they owned and operated for many years. Mr. Alger was a member of St. Peter's Church, Rome, the Steuben Grange, the Town of Western Chorus, the Pinochle Club, and a Bible study group. He was also a senior companion at DSO, Rome, and a former assessor for the town of Western. In addition to his wife, Mary, he is survived by six sons, Michael F. and his wife, Kelly, of Alder Creek, Nicholas J. and his wife, Cheryl, of Jamesville, Mark J. and his wife, Marie, of Boonville, David T. and his fianc, Susan Kraszewski, of Boonville, Russell P. and his fianc, Jennifer Greer, of Accord, NY, and Matthew B. at home; a daughter, Mary E. Maraski and her husband, Robert, of Endicott; seven grandchildren, Burton was predeceased by a son, Richard Alan Alger, on August 2, 1988. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, James and fianc Brittaney Ziegler, Michael, Krystal, Thomas, Ryan, and Joseph and Elizabeth Mary Maraski; a brother and sister-in-law, LaVerne and Virginia Alger of Brisbon, NY; two sisters, Bernice Gardner of Binghamton and Louise Davies of Georgia. Burton was predeceased by a son, Richard Alan Alger, on August 2, 1988, and four brothers, Charles, Irving, Roland, and Harold. His family wishes to express their heart felt thanks and appreciation to the nurses and staff of Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., for the kindness and compassion they rendered to Burt and his family during this difficult time. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects at their convenience on Wednesday, February 11, at the Trainor Funeral Home, 143 Schuyler Street, Boonville, beginning at 1:00 p.m. His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter's Church, North James Street, Rome, where the Reverend Philip Hearn, pastor, will officiate.
