Lyons Falls- Burt E. Green, 83, a long time resident of Markham St. husband of Betty, and a retired educator at Howard G. Sackett Technical Center at Glenfield, passed away on Tuesday, September 6, 2011, at Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse. Burt was born in Buffalo on March 28, 1928, a son of Ralph E. and Charlotte Jayes Green. He grew up in Buffalo where he graduated from a technical high school, and attended Albright Art Gallery. He attended and graduated from Buffalo State University, where he earned a Bachelor Degree in Art Education. After that Mr. Green relocated to Lewis County, where he taught art in various elementary schools in Lewis Co. Mr. Green served his country in Germany in the US Army during the Korean Conflict Era. While serving in the army he attended the Southeastern Signal School at Camp Gordon, GA, where he was certified as a Field Radio Repairman. He was honorably discharged from the service in May, 1955. On August 23, 1952, Burt was united in marriage with Elizabeth Broe at St. Brendan's Catholic Church of Keene, NY. This was a loving union that endured for 59 years. In 1955 the couple settled in Lyons Falls. After serving his country Mr. Green continued his career as an art teacher, and he enrolled in Syracuse University, where he earned a Masters Degree in Audio Visual Communications. For many years thereafter Mr. Green was employed at Howard G. Sackett Technical Center, Glenfield, (Jefferson-Lewis B.O.C.E.S.) in art education, retiring in 1980, as Director of the B.O.C.E.S Audio Visual Program. In additon to his art education career, Burt also taught adult art classes in Lyons Falls, and at area high schools. He taught summer courses in adult drivers education. After he retired from B.O.C.E.S. he devoted time to his hobby of photography, as well as his well known hobby of artistic painting. He was employed for the Boonville Herald as an aerial photographer. He was also employed at Georgia Pacific as a company photographer, and he enjoyed taking photographs of Northern New York outdoor scenes. Mr. Green was a well known painter, who often painted specific pictures for north country residents over a wide area. He was noted for his paintings of trains, nature scenes, Native American scenes, and scenes of the American west. Burt had a life long interest in theater. He was a long time active member of the Players Guild, where he served as a Director, Actor, Set Designer, and Producer, at the Collinsville Theater and at other locations. A highlight of his years with the Players Guild, was when he played the lead role as Suzuki in their production of "Tea House of the August Moon." Mr. Green was a member of St. John's Church, Lyons Falls. He loved animals caring for his pets and playing golf with his friends. He also was interested in model trains, and old toys. For a time he operated the Village Square Antique Shop in Lyons Falls. In addition to his wife, Betty, he is survived by five children, Nelson, Greig, NY, Gordon and his wife, Denise, Billerica, MA, Michael and his wife, Anne, Sylva, NC, Sheila Buckingham and her husband, Chris, Lowville, Rebecca Wenner, and her husband, Scott, Dewitt, ten grandchildren, two great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, George. His Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday at 10:00 AM at St. John's Church, Lyons Falls, where Rev. Lawrence Marullo, pastor will officiate. Visitation hours are Friday 5-8 p.m. at the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville. Relatives and friends are also invited to attend a grave side service on Saturday, September 17, 2011, at 9:30 A.M. at Wildwood Cemetery, Lyons Falls, where Rev. Lawrence Marullo will officiate, followd by Military Honors from Charles J. Love Post American Legion, Harland J. Hennessey Post V.F.W. and the Tun Tavern Marine Corps League, all of Boonville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lewis Co. Humane society, 6388 Pine Grove Road Glenfield, NY 13343.
