Benjamin A. Sweeney
Boonville- Benjamin A. Sweeney, 83, of Lewis Road, husband of Barbara and a former resident of State Rt. 26, Mohawk Hill, passed away while surrounded by the loving care of his family, on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at Wynn Hospital, Utica.
Affectionately known as Ben, he was born Boonville, on September 17, 1941, a son of Peter L. and Wilma Kessler Sweeney, Sr. He grew up in the Boonville area and was first employed on various farms in the Boonville area.
On April 4, 1964, Ben was united in marriage with the love of his life, Barbara Swartout, at St. Joseph’s Church, Boonville. Afterwards the couple lived in Ava, before autumn, 1964, they purchased the Pawlicki homestead farm, on Rt. 26, near West Leyden Ben and Barbara established the B. Sweeney Swampy Rock Farm. Ben possessed a strong work ethic; farming was his passion and he enjoyed a full range of farm related activities, including managing a milk route, transporting cattle and attending cattle auctions every Thursday. In addition, Ben enjoyed an interest in operating heavy equipment and was employed for Swartout Construction of Boonville. In 2008, he retired from farming and the couple moved to their present home on Lewis Road, near Boonville.
He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Boonville.
In addition to his wife of 60 years, Barbara, Ben is survived by his six sons; Benjamin L. (Bev) Boonville, Bruce (Christine) Tennessee, Barry (Nancy) Boonville, Barney (Heather), Remsen, Brian (Sara), West Leyden, Bernard (Sheri), Boonville; many grandchildren, great grandchildren; sisters, Florence Hrim, Betty Tanney, Jane Pfendler and Sheila Rucki and a brother, Clifford Oberiter. He was predeceased by sisters, Mary Platt, Linda Faris and by a brother, Peter, Jr.
His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Matthew Rawson, at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at St. Joseph’s church, Boonville, with interment in the spring in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Boonville. Calling hours, are Friday, from 3-7 P.M. at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville. Memorial contributions may be made to Boonville Fire Company Ambulance Fund, P.O. box 164, Boonville, NY 13309.
A luncheon will follow his services at Boonville Elks Lodge, Rt. 12 south of Boonville, where contributions of food maybe made from 9:30 A.M. on, on Saturday.
