Barbara M. Kiefer

Rome- Barbara M. Kiefer, 89, of Turin St. Rome, widow of Robert and a former resident of O’Brien Road, Forestport, passed away on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, at Betsy Ross Rehabilitation Center, Rome, after a brief illness.


Barbara was born in Utica, on November 10, 1933, a daughter of Donald and Doris Miller Manzer. She grew up in West Utica, graduating from Utica Free Academy. On August 4, 1951, Barbara was united in marriage with Robert Kiefer, in Utica. After that the couple resided in Utica, before moving to Forestport, where they lived on O’Brien Road, at Kayuta Lake for many years. Mr. Kiefer who was a retired City of Utica Firefighter and well known carpenter in the Forestport area, passed away on October 31, 1994. Later, Barbara moved to her present home in Rome.


For many years while living near Forestport, she attended St. Patrick’s Church, Forestport and in later years, St. Peter’s Church, Rome. For many years the social lives of Barbara and her husband, Robert revolved around their membership and service to the Utica Maennerchor (German) Club, now of Marcy, NY, where Mrs. Kiefer served as President of the Ladies Auxiliary for many years. Mrs. Kiefer greatly enjoyed doing many crafts and especially crocheting and knitting.


She is survived by three sons and daughters in law; Frederick (Judy) Kiefer, David (Alison) Kiefer and William (Colleen) Kiefer; one daughter, Sharon Lyon; ten grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren; one brother, Donald Manzer and Maurine Talerico, a longtime friend. Barbara was predeceased by a son in law, Kenneth Lyon, Sr. in 1999.


Services will be Monday, March 20, at 7:00 P.M. at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville, where visitation hours are Monday 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Tribute Program, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38101.
