Boonville- Arthur E. Brownell, 71, of Boonville and of Edgewater, FL, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, October 11, 2022, in Boonville, at the home of his daughter and son in law, Darlene and Aaron Defazio.
Affectionately known as “Artie,” he was born in Rome, on December 30, 1950, a son of Arthur E. and Bertha Zeller Brownell. He grew up on East Road, Boonville, and graduated from Adirondack High School, with the Class of 1970. Thereafter for a short time he was employed at Ethan Allen Furniture Co., Boonville.
On January 25, 1971, he entered into the U.S. Army, serving his country in the Viet Nam War, until his honorable discharge on November 9. 1973. He was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. From 1973, until his honorable discharge, in 1976, Mr. Brownell served in the U.S. Army Reserves.
On November 24, 1973, at St. martin’s Church, Port Leyden, Artie was united in marriage with the love of his life, Katrina Sullivan. Afterwards the couple resided in Framingham, MA, before returning to Boonville. Later for several years they resided on Clinton St. Rome, before moving to Boonville and residing on Summit St. for many years before they constructed a home on Devoe Road, near Boonville. In 2012, Artie and Katrina began living at Edgewater, FL during the winter and in Boonville during the summer.
After serving his country Artie was employed at Rome Cable Co. in the rod mill. In 1989, he began employment with New York State Department of Corrections and retired in 2007, after many years as a CO at the Marcy Correctional Facility.
Artie will be fondly remembered by many as a person who possessed a keen mind and a sharp quick wit and sense of humor. He had the ability to cause laughter and to brighten any gathering he was in. He will be missed by his family and friends.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Boonville, Boonville Fire Department, a life member of Harland J. Hennessey Post VFW, Boonville and a former member of Charles J. Love Post American Legion, Boonville. He greatly enjoyed snowmobiling and boating and Artie was an avid fan of the New England Patriots Football Team. His favorite activity, however, was spending time with his grandchildren, teasing and making them laugh.
In addition to his wife, Katrina, Artie is survived by three daughters and sons in law; Darlene (Aaron) Defazio, Barbara (John) Vanderland, Melinda (Andrew) Maciejko, all of Boonville; grandchildren, Matthew and Mitchell Defazio, Haley Vanderland, Aiden, Laurel, Brady and Parker Maciejko, all in Boonville; his sister, Linda Gallo, West Leyden; brothers in law and sisters in law, Patricia Sullivan, John (Ellen) Sullivan, Sidnee (Louie) Holland, Patrick (Cathie) Sullivan, Paul (Lorraine) Sullivan, Alicia (Lewis) Arthur, Hope (Patrick) Croneiser, Faith (Adrian) Stinebrickner and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Artie was predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Bertha Brownell; brothers in law, Raymond Gallo and Robert Sullivan and his father and mother in law, Loren and Shirley Sullivan.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Military Service at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, October 22, 2022, at the Veteran’s Memorial in Boonville Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to Boonville Fire Department, P.O. Box 164, Boonville, NY 13309. His arrangements are in care of Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. Boonville.
