Boonville - Arlene R. Mathis, 79, a resident of Summit Street since 1962, passed away on Friday, July 31, 2009, at Lewis County Extended Care Facility in Lowville after a brief illness. She was born in Penacook, NH, on December 3, 1929 to Chester and Dorella Bernier Perkins. Arlene grew up in Penacook and attended local schools. In 1948 she moved with her family from New Hampshire to Old Forge, then in 1950 to Boonville, where she was employed as a cook for the late Fred Marcy. On June 7, 1952 she was married to Harry E. Mathis at Turin Methodist Church. The couple purchased a dairy farm on the West Road near Turin which they operated until 1962 when they moved to Boonville. Mrs. Mathis was employed as a waitress at Holcombe's Bakery in Boonville prior to her employment as a sander at Ethan Allen Furniture Co., from where she retired in 1944. Mr. Mathis died on October 22, 2001. Mrs. Mathis greatly enjoyed raising flowers and working in her flower gardens. Surviving is a son, Robert, of Boonville; four sisters, Barbara Lee of Castor, LA, Shirley Simms of Rochester, Rita Flanders of Penecook, NH, and Karen Kozlowski of Savannah, GA; and a brother, Chester W. Perkins, Jr., of AZ. She was predeceased by a sister, Virginia Worthington. Her funeral will be on Tuesday, August 4 at 11:00 a.m. at the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc., 143 Schuyler Street, Boonville. Family and friends may call on Monday, August 3 from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
