Port Leyden - Almeta R.(Mooney) Szewczyk, 80, of Marmon Road, widow of Michael A., passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2008, at St. Luke's Memorial Hospital, New Hartford, after a long illness. She was born in Martinsburg, on August 16, 1928, a daughter of Frank and Ada Williams Mooney. Most of her life was spent in the Lyons Falls and Port Leyden area, where she received her education. Before WWII, she was employed for Monroe Mfg. Co., of Boonville. For thirty-four years, Mrs. Szewczyk served as Deputy Clerk for the Town of Lyonsdale. On October 27, 1945, Almeta was united in marriage with Michael A. Szewczyk at St. Joseph's Church, Boonville. In 1949, the couple constructed their home on Marmon Road near Port Leyden, where she had since lived. Mr. Szewczyk, a retired truck driver for Barrett Paving Co. of Boonville, died on August 2, 2006. She was a member of St. Martin's Church, Port Leyden, and greatly enjoyed sewing, quilting, and embroidering. Mrs. Szewczyk is survived by one son, James M. Szewczyk, at home; one sister, Irene A. Fitzgerald, Port Leyden; and nieces and nephews. A daughter, Carol Irene, died as an infant. Relatives and friends are invited to attend visitation hours on Friday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc., 143 Schuyler St. Boonville, and a graveside funeral service on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Wildwood Cemetery, Lyons Falls. Memorial contributions may be made to either the Port Leyden Fire Co. Ambulance Fund, or to the Lyons Falls Fire Co. Ambulance Fund.
