Rome- Allen A. Coleman, 80 a long time resident of Bartlett Rd. husband of Karen, passed away on Wednesday, Janaury 25, 2012, at St. Luke's Memorial Hospital, in New Hartford. Since June, 2011, Mr. Coleman had resided at the Rome Center Nursing Facility. He was born in Utica, on December 23, 1931, a son of Clayton A. and Hilda Mae Genther Coleman. He grew up in Swancott Mills, graduating from West Leyden Central School, with the Class of 1950. From 1950-1954, during the Korean Conflict, Mr. Coleman served his country in the U.S. Navy in the Construction Batallion. After his honorable discharge he settled in Rome. For fifty years he was a member of United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local 127, of Utica, NY, where he was employed in general construction. On October 22, 1960, Allen was united in marriage with Karen Kent, at St. Mary's Church, Rome. This was a loving union that endured for 51 years. After their marriage the couple settled in the Rome area, moving to their present home in 1967. In addition to his wife, Karen, he is survived by his children and their spouses, Steven, Syracuse, Scott and Donna Coleman, Deansboro, Laurie and Rick Szmurlo, Rome, Mark, Rome, Brian, Long Beach, NY, and Eric, Rome; five grandchildren, Mark Jr, Marisa, Will, Hannah and Emily; two brothers, Ronald N. and Shirley, Durham, NC, Norman C. and Toni, Utica; three sisters, Marilyn I. O'Connor, Rome, Carol and George Rall, Niceville, FL and Brenda and Delbert Becker, Palatine Bridge, a half sister, Sue O'Connor, Rome, a special aunt, June and husband, Hugh Aikens, Rome, and several nieces and nephews. Allen's family sends a special note of thanks and appreciation to the nursing staff and aides at the Rome Center, and to Dr. Eldridge, and staff of 3West at St. Luke's Memorial Hospital. His Funeral will be Tuesday at 11:00 A.M. at Prince Boyd & Hyatt Funeral Home, Inc. 210 West Court St. Rome, where Rev. Deborah Wollaber, pastor of Lee Center and Point Rock United Methodist Churches will officiate. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Rome. Visitation is Monday 4-8 P.M. at the funeral home.
