Alice (Scherz) Hutton, 97, widow of William F., a retired elementary school teacher, passed away at her residence on Tuesday, July 31, 2012, while in the loving care of her family and caregivers. Alice was born in Pine Island, Minnesota, on March 12, 1915, a daughter of Ernest and Anna Burki Scherz. She moved to New York State as a child, attending school in New London, and Boonville, where she graduated from high school with the Class of 1933. In 1936, Alice graduated from Potsdam State Teachers College with a degree in elementary education. For two years following her graduation from Potsdam State, Mrs. Hutton taught at a Potsdam Campus School, before teaching at Boonville Central School, a career that spanned twenty one years, and included fifteen years as a 3rd grade teacher, retiring from Adirondack Central School System in 1979. On June 24, 1938, Alice was united in marriage with William F. Hutton at Mexico, NY; in the early 1940's the couple settled in Boonville. Mr. Hutton, a retired engineer at the N.Y.S. School for the Deaf of Rome, died on August 30, 1984. Mrs. Hutton was a member of Boonville United Methodist Church, Salma-Mappa Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, Boonville and the Adirondack Central School and NYS Retired Teachers Association. She loved playing golf, and greatly enjoyed music. Alice was very devoted to her four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She is survived by one son and daughter in law, Jerry W. and Anita Hutton, Boonville; one daughter, Lucinda H. Obernesser, Brantingham, NY; four grandchildren, Gretchen Irene, Chad Hutton, Megan Bogert and Shana Hutton, six great grandchildren; and one sister, Freda O'Brien, Roseville, CA. She was predeceased by six sisters, Marie Glur, Mildred Leslie, Hilda Zarnoch, Ida Rimiller, Anna Pierce and Margaret Yauger; and by five brothers, John, Fred, Ernest, Arnold and Charles. Her Services will be Saturday at 11:00 A.M. at Trinity Episcopal Church, Schuyler St. Boonville, where Rev. Linda Logan, Rector will officiate with a Requiem Eucharist.
