West Leyden - Aaron M. Beyel, 93, formerly of Mud Lake Road and currently of State Route 294, passed away Saturday, December 26, 2009 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica. For a short time prior to entering the hospital, Mr. Beyel had resided at Sunset Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Boonville. A native and life long resident of West Leyden, Aaron was born at the Beyel homestead farm on October 17, 1916 to John P. and Carrie (Miller) Beyel. He graduated from West Leyden Central School with the Class of 1937. Aaron excelled in playing basketball and baseball during high school and his love for those sports would remain throughout his lifetime. On June 25, 1938, Aaron was united in marriage with Leah M. Houser at the Ava Methodist Church Parsonage by Reverend Suits. This was a very special union that endured for over seventy-one years. The coupled settled on the Beyel farm, which they later purchased and operated until Aaron retired in 1971 and they moved to State Route 294. In addition to farming, Mr. Beyel had been employed at the former Feyï¿(TM)s Furniture Co. of West Leyden, the West Leyden Post Office as a substitute letter carrier, and from 1971 until 1979, at the Town of Lewis Highway Department. Mr. Beyel was a life member of the West Leyden Reformed Church. For over forty years he served on the church board and was very active in all church affairs. He was a founding father of the new West Leyden Fire Co. For many years he served as president of West Leyden Cemetery Association, and also on the Board of Directors of West Leyden Milk Producers Association. In addition to his wife, Leah, he is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Roger A. and Donna Beyel of West Leyden, and James W. and Dora Beyel of Poland; ten grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and a brother, Charles Beyel of West Leyden. He was predeceased by a sister, Lauretta Blixt. His funeral will be Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc., 143 Schuyler Street, Boonville, where the Revï¿(TM)d Donald Medoff will officiate. Interment in the spring will be in West Leyden Cemetery. Visitation is Tuesday 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Flowers are gratefully declined; however, memorial contibutions may be made to the West Leyden Reformed Church, St. Michaelï¿(TM)s Episcopal Church, Middleville, or the West Leyden Fire Company Ambulance Fund.
