Lyons Falls - Duane F. Ossont, 64, a native and life resident of Franklin Street passed away suddenly in Lyons Falls on Tuesday, June 23, 2009. Affectionately known as "Raw Dog", he was the husband of Nonie Ossont. He was born on September, 4, 1944, a son of Floyd R. and Arlene Mashaw Ossont. He graduated from Lyons Falls High School with the Class of 1962 and on January 7, 1963, he entered the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Ossont was rightfully proud of his competent and loyal military service to his country in and during the war in Viet Nam. He completed six trips from the U.S. to Viet Nam aboard large Air Force planes transporting army supplies as Loadmaster. In June of 1965 he attained the rank of Sergeant and served in active duty until January 6, 1967, when he entered the Air Force Reserves. He received his honorable discharge from the Reserves in January of 1969. For many years thereafter, Mr. Ossont was employed in commercial building construction, some of that time specifically for Law Bros. Construction Co., Lyons Falls, and Crane Silo Co., Barneveld. His last employment was for Sangra Construction Co. of Syracuse, constructing the Marquee Cinema Center located at The Orchard Shopping Center in New Hartford. He retired in 2005. On October 30, 1971, Duane was united in marriage with Leona M. Shue (affectionately known as "Nonie") at St. John's Church in Lyons Falls. Mr. Ossont was a member of Harland J. Hennessey Post #5538 VFW, Boonville, where he served as Post Commander from 1992-1993, Boonville Elks Lodge #2158, and Lowville VFW Post #6912. He loved the New York Yankees, NASCAR racing, the New York Giants football team, and hunting and fishing, especially on the Moose River. In addition to his wife he is survived by a son, Todd F. and his fiance, Elizabeth Martin of Lyons Falls; two daughters and sons-in-law, Heather A. and Mark Miller of Constableville, and Lisa M. and Thomas Monks of Lyons Falls; three grandsons and three granddaughters; four brothers, William Ossont and his wife, Patricia, of Medina, NY, Jeffrey M.Ossont and his wife, Christine, of Ocee, FL, Peter G. Ossont and his wife, Susie, of Lyons Falls, and Reginald W. Ossont of Constableville; three sisters, Pricilla Linck and her husband, James, of Constableville, Maxine McConnell and her husband, Charles, of Boonville, and Denise Reed and her husband, James, of Canastota; several nieces and nephews; and his father-in-law, Karl Shue of Port Leyden. He was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth, in August of 1973. He is also survived by his loveable dog and special buddy, "Dudley". His Funeral will be Friday at 11:00 a.m. at the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc., 143 Schuyler Street, Boonville, where the Reverend Stephen Gratto, pastor of St. Martin's & St. John's Churches will officiate. Interment with military honors by Harland J. Hennessey Post #5538 VFW, Charles J. Love Post #406 American Legion and Tun Tavern Leathernecks Marine Corps League Detachment 961, all of Boonville, will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Lyons Falls. Calling hours at the funeral home are Thursday 4-9 p.m. and Friday 9:30-11:00 a.m. Honor Guard members will meet Thursday at 7:00 p.m.; members of the Boonville Elks Lodge #2158 will meet Thursday at 8 p.m. for their ritualistic service. Memorial contributions may be made to Lyons Falls Fire Company and Ambulance Fund.
