Arlene C. Scheer

October 12, 1927 — September 15, 2022

Arlene C. Scheer, 94, of Ocala, FL, passed away on September 15th, 2022.

Born in New York Mills, NY, on October 12, 1927, Arlene was the daughter of William and Allison Renton Combellack. She graduated from New York Mills High School in 1944. During World War II, Arlene worked at the Rome Air Depot (Griffiss Air Force Base) as a plane maintenance worker. She was a genuine Rosie the Riveter, and she was named Miss Disassembly of 1944. She worked as a telephone switchboard operator for New York Telephone in Utica, NY, from 1945 until 1950 when she transferred to Binghamton, NY. She was employed with New York Telephone until 1954. She always had a smile in her voice.

She married Walter Jacob Scheer on November 18, 1950, at the Walcott Memorial Presbyterian Church in New York Mills, NY. They honeymooned in New York City where they attended the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. They raised their family in Boonville, NY.

Arlene was a member of the Home Bureau in Boonville. She also worked for many years as a library aide at the Boonville Erwin Library. She was a member of the Tuesday Night Ladies’ Bowling league. Arlene had a passion and a talent for needlework, ceramics, and painting. She shared her work with family and friends who still cherish those pieces today. She was active in the First Presbyterian Church, and her needlework was a much anticipated addition to the church’s annual Christmas bazaar.

After retiring, Arlene and Walt spent their winters in Ocala, FL, where they were members of the Silver Springs Shores Presbyterian Church. They spent their summers at Brantingham Lake, NY. If one listens carefully, one can still hear the Combellack girls singing, giggling, and telling stories on the porch at camp. Arlene and Walt spent 68 wonderful years together. Walt preceded Arlene in death on November 27, 2018.

Arlene is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Karen Scheer, Mechanicsburg, PA, and Randall and Susan Scheer, New Albany, OH; a grandson and his wife, Christopher and Priscilla Scheer, Clay, NY; two granddaughters, Dr. Lindsey Battiste and her husband, Dr. Matthew Battiste, Glenville, NY, and Alyssa Scheer, Nashville, TN; two great-grandsons, Jacob Scheer and Louis Battiste; and two great-granddaughters, Lila Scheer and Fiona Battiste. She is also survived by her sister Jean Eggers of Ocala, FL. Her sister Isabelle Rogal predeceased her on August 16, 2016.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a graveside service on Sunday, October 16, 2022, at 1:00 P.M. at Brantingham Cemetery, hamlet of Brantingham, NY. There are no calling hours.  Memorial contributions may be made to The Amercian Heart Association, 120 Lomond Court, Utica, NY 13502.  Her arrangements are in care of Trainor Funeral Home, Inc.
