Obituary of Jon Underwood

West Leyden – Jon Paul Underwood, 47, husband of Tracy, passed away following a brief illness, on Wednesday, February 1, 2017, while surrounded by the loving care of his wife and children, and friends, at St. Luke’s Memorial Hospital, New Hartford.

Jon was born on February 15, 1969 a son of William J. and Joyce Skalski Underwood. He was a lifelong resident of the Osceola road, and was a graduate of Adirondack Central High School, with the class of 1987.

Jon was a member of the US Army Reserves from 1986 until his honorable discharge in 1994. He served his country at Elihu Root Army Reserve Center, Utica, NY, in 63B Light Wheel Vehicle Mechanic and Company 12B Combat Engineers.

He was first employed as a truck driver for Rauscher Bros., Inc., West Leyden, and at South Lewis Central School, before beginning his career in highway construction. Jon was employed as a heavy equipment operator and mechanic for Rifenburg Construction, Troy, NY, and most recently for C.C.I. Companies, Inc., Canastota, NY. Jon was a hardworking man, who took pride in everything he did, and there wasn’t a job he couldn’t do.

On June 15, 1996, Jon was united in marriage with Tracy L. Flansburg at St. Mary’s Church, Constableville.

An outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, as well as socializing and playing cards with his cherished friends and neighbors. Jon was a member of the West Leyden Volunteer Fire Dept., Boonville Elks Lodge #2158, and the Charles J. Love Post #406 American Legion.

Besides his wife, Tracy, Jon is survived by a son, Jack Lucas Underwood; a daughter, Sabrina Tiffany ( Bird) Underwood, both of West Leyden; his siblings, Sharon (David) Dean, West Leyden, Penny (Jerry) Ball, Virginia, Laura (Scott) Scales, Lee Center, William (Sheila) Underwood, West Leyden, Joseph (Dionne) Underwood, Point Rock; nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews; and many close and special friends and his extended CCI family. Jon is also survived by his father and mother-in-law, Thomas (Patricia) Flansburg, brother and sister-in-law Dale (Dee) Flansburg, and his beloved canine friends; Amos and Baby Girl. Jon was predeceased by his mother Joyce in October 2010, and by his father William in June 2014.

Funeral Services will be on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at 5:00 pm at the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville. Calling hours will be Saturday from 11:00 am until the time of the funeral at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the West Leyden Volunteer Fire Dept. P.O. Jon’s family would like to extend many thanks to the West Leyden Fire and Ambulance personnel for their prompt and professional services, and also to Dr. Scott Brehaut and the staff of the 2nd Floor St. Luke’s Intensive Care unit for the excellent care and compassion shown to Jon and our family during his stay.
